Current Song Obsession: “Living in the City” by Hurray for the Riff Raff

Driving home for my dad’s birthday in late May. Escarpment to the left of me, Lake Ontario to the right. CBC Radio, my road companion.

This song comes on and I get a feeling that seems to be more elusive the older I get. The particular sense of satisfaction when hearing a song for the first time and it has you at hello.

The warm, slightly muddy blend of the bass, acoustic and electric guitars during the intro. The bouncy bass line and Ringo-esque beat and fills. The balance of acoustic and electric energy, strumming and licks. The lazy guitar solo that packs a punch.

And her voice! The way it cuts through and sounds as if we’re right at her mic. I love that.

The cherry on top: Hurray for the Riff Raff covers “Be My Baby” by the Ronettes.
