LMT Connection with Chops Horns

One of the perks of living in downtown St. Catharines is being in close proximity to Montebello Park. Designed by American landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted in 1887 (apparently he was kind of a big deal), Montebello became the first parkland in St. Catharines.

In addition to being a lovely green space for anyone to enjoy, the park is also home to many annual events that draw crowds to its otherwise (relatively) quiet grounds, such as the Niagara Grape & Wine Festival and the St. Catharines Rotary Ribfest – the latter of which happens to be taking place this weekend.

The park is also home to the City’s annual free Summer Concert Series. This year’s series ran on Wednesday evenings throughout the month of July.

And it was in on a Wednesday evening in July where I sat and listened in sheer funk-induced blissed-out delight as LMT Connection with Chops Horns rocked Montebello Park.

Here’s a taste of their performance. (I did not shoot this video. Thank you to the person who captured this song!)

I had no idea who these musicians were but was nonetheless dumbstruck by how crazy and cool it was to be sitting in Montebello park, in golden hour, down the street from my humble abode, listening to a band (a funk band!) of their caliber –  for free. These were obviously seasoned pros.

Which is why it came as no surprise to learn that the members of LMT Connection (based in Niagara Falls, Canada) and Chops Horns (based in New Jersey) have collectively played with heavy hitters of Motown, soul, R&B, and rock. We’re talking the likes of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Parliament-Funkadelic, Ronnie Hawkins, The Rolling Stones, The Police, and Alicia Keys – to name a few.

LMT Connection will take the stage again in Montebello Park tomorrow afternoon (Monday, August 6th) from 2:15-4:30 as Ribfest winds down for another year, and they will no doubt make it feel like the party’s just getting started.

And I will be there, listening in sheer funk-induced blissed-out delight. Calm on the outside…
